Dear Amy Maestri,
Your analysis of Webb’s article had several large blunders.
You failed to realize that Webb’s paper was complete satire, as evidenced by his last paragraph and his obvious references to Christianity and conservative suburban families being a large portion of American society, and even refusing to capitalize ‘He’ or ‘Him’ when referring to God. “(And by the way, if you are going to bring God into a discussion such as this; at least show the respect to capitalize “He” or “Him” when referring to Him.)”
You take Webb’s incomplete and contradictory points seriously. “You also mention that girls are too smart to play baseball. So I assume by that you mean only dumb people play baseball.”, “Girls are too smart to waste an entire day playing baseball, and they do not have the bloodlust for football.” Here Webb makes references to conservatism in his argument concerning females Most notably the conservative image of women being graceful and humble.
You also fail to realize Webb’s intentional use of politics and religion in his essay as sarcasm.
Webb was sarcastically referring baseball as a gladiator event, Webb knows how much kids in baseball are coddled and how droning it can be when prolonged as Webb has experience with the sport. Webb crafts his argument as if he was making fun of baseball, but replacing ‘baseball’ with ‘soccer’. If You read your own argument and took Webb’s experience with baseball into mind, you would have been able to catch this.
With his children on soccer teams, Webb is aware that penalty kicks and shootouts are entertaining, as he watches his children participate in them during their games, and purposefully calls them anticlimactic in an ironic sense, Webb is aware of the skill required to play soccer and calling shootouts anticlimactic is nonsensical.
“Shootouts are such an anticlimax to the game and are so unpredictable that the teams might as well flip a coin to see who wins; indeed, they might as well flip the coin before the game, and not play at all.”
“it’s interesting that you say penalty shoot outs are anti climatic because most soccer haters say that’s the only part they like. It’s the part where everyone is on the edge of their seat to see who will win.”
In conclusion, Amy you need to 1. read more carefully, 2. understand what you are reading, 3. recognize sarcasm, 4. not be so critical of others, 5. when you call someone an I.I.A. don’t be wrong because you will just come out looking like an I.I.A. who eats too many doughnuts from California Doughnuts across the street from your apartment complex.
sincerely,
Dylan King, Justin Lockamy, Adam Whiteside
